Spectral Analysis of the Chandra Comet Survey

چکیده
Aims. We present results of the analysis of cometary X-ray spectra with an extended version of our charge exchange emission model (Bodewits et al. 2006). We have applied this model to the sample of 8 comets thus far observed with the Chandra X-ray observatory and spectrometer in the 300–1000 eV range. The surveyed comets are C/1999 S4 (), C/1999 T1 (McNaught– Hartley), C/2000 WM1 (), 153P/2002 (Ikeya–Zhang), 2P/2003 (Encke), C/2001 Q4 (), 9P/2005 (Tempel 1) and 73P/2006B (Schwassmann–Wachmann 3) and the observations include a broad variety of comets, solar wind environments and observational conditions. Methods. The interaction model is based on state selective, velocity dependent charge exchange cross sections and is used to explore how cometary X-ray emission depend on cometary, observational and solar wind characteristics. It is further demonstrated that cometary X-ray spectra mainly reflect the state of the local solar wind. The current sample of Chandra observations was fit using the constrains of the charge exchange model, and relative solar wind abundances were derived from the X-ray spectra. Results. Our analysis showed that spectral differences can be ascribed to different solar wind states, as such identifying comets interacting with (I) fast, cold wind, (II), slow, warm wind and (III) disturbed, fast, hot winds associated with interplanetary coronal mass ejections. We furthermore predict the existence of a fourth spectral class, associated with the cool, fast high latitude wind.

A Search for EUV Emission from Comets with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer ( CHIPS )
– 2 – We have obtained EUV spectra between 90 and 255Å of the comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) near their perihelion passages in 2004 with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS). We obtained contemporaneous data on Comet NEAT Q4 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS instrument, marking the first simultaneous EUV and X-ray spectral observat...

We have obtained EUV spectra between 90 and 255 8 of the comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) near their perihelion passages in 2004 with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS). We obtained contemporaneous data on NEAT with the Chandra ACIS instrument, marking the first simultaneous EUVandX-ray spectral observations of a comet. The total CHIPS/E...
متن کاملA Chandra mini-survey of X-ray weak quasars
We present Chandra observations of 18 spectroscopically selected quasars, already known to be X-ray weak from previous ROSAT observations. All the sources but one are detected by Chandra, and spectral analysis suggests that most of them are intrinsically underluminous in the X-rays (by a factor from 3 to > 100). These objects could represent a large population of quasars with a Spectral Energy ...
متن کاملA high-resolution infrared spectral survey of Comet C/1999 H1 Lee
We obtained high-resolution (λ/ λ∼ 25,000) spectra of Comet C/1999 H1 (Lee) on UT 1999 August 19.6 and 21.6 using the cross-dispersed Near InfraRed SPECtrometer (NIRSPEC) at the Keck Observatory atop Mauna Kea, HI. Here we present spectra of Comet Lee between 2.874 and 3.701 μm (3479–2702 cm−1) representing the most complete high-resolution infrared survey of a comet to date in this wavelength ...
متن کاملChandra Observations of A2670 and A2107: A Comet Galaxy and cDs with Large Peculiar Velocities
We present an analysis of Chandra observations of the galaxy clusters A2670 and A2107. Their cD galaxies have large peculiar velocities (> 200 km s) and thus the clusters appear to be undergoing mergers. In A2670, we find a comet-like structure around one of the brightest galaxies. At the leading edge of the structure, there is a cold front. The mass of the X-ray gas in the comet-like structure...
